AGNC Investment Corp., the Bethesda, Maryland based mortgage real estate investment trust, has again raised its quarterly dividend, lifting the indicated yield on its shares to 8.69% following the company's most recent payout declaration.
The REIT declared a quarterly dividend of $0.5358 per share on September 9, 2026, payable October 15 to holders of record as of the October 1 ex-dividend date. Annualized, the new rate works out to $2.1432 per share. Against the stock's October 14 closing level of $24.67, up $0.03, or 0.12%, on the day, that annualized payout produces the 8.69% yield, placing AGNC Investment among the higher yielding names tracked in the mortgage REIT sector. A move that first stood out in data tracked on Dividendly, a Madison Labs research site, flagged the payout as "Recently Increased" in its dividend status tracker.
For a mortgage REIT, a dividend increase of this kind typically reflects how the underlying portfolio is performing relative to its cost of funds. AGNC does not originate loans directly. Instead it buys residential mortgage backed securities and collateralized mortgage obligations whose principal and interest are backed by U.S. government agencies or government sponsored enterprises, financing those holdings mainly through short term repurchase agreements. The spread between what the portfolio earns and what it costs to finance, often called the net interest margin in the sector, is a primary driver of earnings available for distribution, and by extension of the dividend the board elects to declare each quarter.
The payout change may matter to income focused investors because mortgage REIT yields are closely tied to the direction of interest rates, and in particular to the shape of the Treasury curve. Falling market rates can lower a company's repo funding costs faster than the yields on its agency MBS holdings reset, a dynamic that can support or widen the net interest margin, at least
